Interview 1: Alyssa Giarrusso, Membership & Special Events Coordinator for Columbus Crew
Alyssa Giarrusso is the Membership & Special Events Coordinator for the Columbus Crew. She has many responsibilities, but her main ones are to plan and execute Crew SC Season Ticket Member exclusive events. However, she is also responsible for the Plaza on Match Days, which includes overseeing the Marketing and Match Activation internship programs. She says she really enjoys the culture at Columbus Crew SC and it is her favorite thing about working there. Another one of her favorite parts about working for Crew SC is working for a team that she supports and believes in, continually bring excitement to every home match. About this she said, “These are perks that you won’t find outside of the sports industry.” Her typical office hours during the week are 8:30-5:30, but this can change with pre-match days and match days. Especially with her position she said her hours fluctuate a lot with event coordination as well working special events throughout the week. Office attire at Crew SC is “business casual” or “smart casual”.
Prior to working at Crew SC Alyssa attended Ohio Wesleyan University were both her father and brother attended. She obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Management while participating as a member of the Women’s Soccer team. During her Undergraduate time, she had other professional work experiences staring in 2015, she spent the summer as a social media/marketing intern for a minor league baseball team in New Jersey. This was her first foray into the world of professional sports, and it was such an enjoyable experience that she decided to pursue it as a career. The following summer, she interned in the Box Office at the New York Red Bulls. Getting a behind the scenes look at the functions of a Major League Soccer team solidified her decision to pursue a career in professional sports, and pushed her towards furthering experiences in professional soccer. During the spring of her senior year at Ohio Wesleyan, she was the Supporter Services intern with Columbus Crew SC, assisting the membership team with any projects or tasks they needed. It was during this internship that she was considered for a full-time position with the club, and was officially brought on full-time after graduation.
Personally I really enjoyed working by Alyssa and learning from her first hand. We talked a lot about her previous experiences as I as well am interested in having a career in professional sports preferably soccer or basketball. She gave me lots of information and insight on things I can do to improve and round myself for future opportunities. I hope to continue to use this great professional connection Alyssa and I have created.
